Reverse Osmosis — Better Life Water Solutions water treatment equipment installed in a Michigan home

Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Systems

Reverse osmosis is a final polish for the water you drink and cook with. It lives under the kitchen sink, feeds a dedicated faucet, and can run a line to the refrigerator for ice and cold water.

How reverse osmosis works

Water is pushed through a semi-permeable membrane with openings small enough that most dissolved material cannot pass through. A small storage tank holds the treated water so it is ready when you open the faucet.

Carbon filters — the kind in pitchers and refrigerators — do good work on chlorine and taste but do not remove dissolved solids. That is the gap reverse osmosis closes.

What the install looks like

The unit and its tank sit under the kitchen sink. A small dedicated faucet is mounted on the counter next to your main one — that is your RO tap. If you want ice and cold water from the fridge to come from the same source, we can run a line to it.

Filter changes take about ten minutes once a year.

It is a companion, not a replacement

Reverse osmosis produces drinking-quality water at one faucet. It does nothing for your showers, your laundry or your water heater. Whole-home filtration and softening handle those.

Most homeowners who install both describe them as solving two different problems, and that is exactly right.

On well water, pretreatment comes first

An RO membrane fed untreated well water will foul quickly on iron and hardness. On a private well, the iron filter and softener go in first — they are what protect the membrane and keep the annual service simple.

Pricing

Reverse osmosis is most often added to a complete system, and it is priced as an add-on at the time of quote.

If you only want RO at the kitchen, we can quote that on its own after the in-home test. Either way the installed price is in writing before work starts.
