How manganese shows up

Dark staining rather than the orange of iron. Black specks in a glass or at the bottom of the kettle. Grey or brown-purple marks in the dishwasher and on light-colored laundry. Sometimes a slightly bitter or metallic taste.

Because iron and manganese frequently occur together, a lot of homes see both orange and black staining at once.

Why it is trickier than iron

Manganese oxidizes more slowly than iron and is more sensitive to pH. Media and conditions that handle iron perfectly well can leave manganese passing straight through, which is why homes sometimes get an iron filter and still see black staining afterwards.

Getting it right means measuring both the manganese and the pH, and selecting media that will actually oxidize it under your water's conditions.

How it is treated

Oxidation followed by filtration, in the same stage that handles iron and sulfur where possible. In some cases pH adjustment goes ahead of that stage so the oxidation works reliably.

The point of a test-first approach is precisely this kind of problem. Nothing about manganese is guessable from looking at the water.

We test the water in your home before recommending anything. Hardness, iron, pH, sulfur indicators and TDS take a few minutes to measure, and they decide the equipment. Guessing at this stage is how homeowners end up with a system that treats the wrong problem.
